Ottawa sends two battalions/legions to the South African War (formerly known as the Second Boer War).

Federal government creates Ottawa Improvement Commission, predecessor of the National Capital Commission, which resulted in the development of such known Ottawa features as the driveways along the canal, and exerted more federal influence on construction, land use, and commerce, which began to dictate the look of the city and region. The Federal District Commission was established by Mackenzie King in 1927, and in 1959, this becomes the National Capital Commission.

Ottawa School of Art ceases to function, revived in 1923.
